Goat Feed

Feeding by Life Stage

Kids (0–3 months)

Kids rely primarily on milk — dam or bottle — for the first weeks. Introduce starter hay and a small amount of grain by week 2–3 to encourage rumen development. Keep grain portions small to avoid digestive upset.

Does in Milk (lactating)

Lactating does have the highest nutritional demands. Feed 16–18% protein grain ration based on milk output — roughly ½–1 lb grain per lb of milk produced daily. Monitor body condition closely.

Dry Does & Wethers

Dry does and wethers need minimal grain — quality forage (hay or pasture) should make up 80–90% of their diet. Over-conditioning dry does leads to kidding complications. Provide a loose goat mineral free-choice always.

Why Non-GMO?

For small-scale dairy goat operations and those selling milk or cheese, Non-GMO and organic feeds matter. Buyers at farmers markets and artisan dairies increasingly ask about feed sourcing. Our Kalmbach Non-GMO Pellets and KOFFI Organic Grain Mix let you answer that question with confidence.

Nutritional Tips for Goats

What to Look For

  • • Copper included (goats need more than sheep)
  • • Ammonium chloride for wethers (prevents urinary stones)
  • • Balanced Ca:P ratio
  • • Added selenium if in deficient area

Common Mistakes

  • • Feeding sheep mineral (no copper — toxic risk)
  • • Over-graining dry does
  • • No loose mineral available
  • • Switching feeds too quickly

Seasonal Advice

  • • Increase grain in late gestation (last 6 weeks)
  • • Offer baking soda free-choice to buffer rumen
  • • Summer: watch for bloat with lush pasture
  • • Winter: extra hay keeps the rumen warm
